African, Oceanic and Meso-American Treasures from the Museum's Permanent Collection
Boca Raton Museum of Art African, Oceanic, Meso-American Treasures.

In the first decade of the twentieth century, tribal sculpture was "discovered" by modern artists. These objects - particularly those of Africa, Oceania, and Meso-America - suddenly became a crucial influence to modern art. "Primitivism" influenced the works of Gauguin, the Fauves, Picasso, Brancusi, the German Expressionists, Modigliani, Klee, Giacometti, the Surrealists, and the Abstract Expressionists, as well as contemporary artists and art movements including earthworks, shamanism, and ritual-inspired performance.

This exhibition features nearly 70 exquisite masterpieces of African, Oceanic and Meso-American art - sculptural figures, masks, ritual artifacts, architectural elements, adornments, and performance items. Visually stunning and intellectually provocative, this exhibition will confront the complex aesthetic, art- historical, and sociological problems posed by collecting and appreciating tribal art. The exhibition presents outstanding masterpieces of African, Oceanic and Meso-American treasures from the Museum's Permanent Collection.

Elvis at 21: Photographs by Alfred Wertheimer
Boca Raton Museum of Art Elvis Presley at 21

In 1956, a twenty-one-year-old Elvis Presley was at the beginning of his remarkable career. Up-and-coming photographer Alfred Wertheimer (American, 1929- ) was asked by Presley's new label, RCA Victor, to photograph the "Hillbilly Cat" rising star from Mississippi. Wertheimer traveled with Elvis Presley, capturing the unguarded moments in Elvis's life during that crucial year, a year that took him from Tupelo, Mississippi to the silver screen, and to the verge of international stardom and his crowning as "The King of Rock 'n' Roll." These Wertheimer classic images represent the only candid photos of Elvis ever taken. Shortly after, "the Colonel" restricted access to the young singer. From backstage to onstage, from piano benches to Harleys, from on-the-road to screaming fans, Elvis at 21 presents forty large-format photographs that chronicle with cinematic luminosity, a remarkable time when Elvis could sit alone at a drugstore lunch counter.

Rememberingstanleyboxer: A Retrospective 1946-2000
Boca Raton Museum of Art Remembering Stanley Boxer

New York native Stanley Boxer (1926-2000) is best known for his large scale abstract paintings which have a rich sculptural quality produced by thick, impasto brushwork. This retrospective exhibition features 50 paintings and 13 sculptures dating from 1946 through 2000. Boxer's paintings were championed by American modernist critic Clement Greenberg (1906-1994), famous for his insistence that painters should eliminate subject matter in their work, aiming instead for the purity of abstraction. Boxer studied at the Art Students League and began exhibiting in New York in 1953. Awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1975, and elected to the National Academy of Design in 1993, Boxer became one of America's most eminent mid-century abstract painters, with works now held by every major museum in America including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, the Boston Museum of Fine Art, the San Francisco Museum of Art and the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C.

WORLDLY SCULPTURES
CAPTURING MOVEMENT AT
MUSEUM OF ART

Bronze ballerinas and basking bathers decorate the southwest corner of Mizner Park in celebration of Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures, was on display from Jan. 25 through April 27 at the Boca Raton Museum of Art.

As a French painter and sculptor in the 19th century, Edgar Degas found himself fascinated with ballerinas, racehorses and bathers, and studied their movement which he captured in his pieces. The works remained hidden with the exception of one statue that was shown during his lifetime. After his death in 1917, the wax and clay sculptures were discovered and Degas’ family made the decision to preserve the sculptures in bronze.

“The exhibition Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures is an extremely rare opportunity to view bronze casts made from all 73 sculptures by the great French impressionist master, Edgar Degas, in a single exhibition,” said Wendy Blazier, Senior Curator at the museum. “Only four complete sets of these bronzes exist in the world: in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; the Musée d'Orsay in Paris; the Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek in Copenhagen; and the Museu de Arte de São Paulo, Brazil.”

The artwork shows Degas’ ability to capture gestures, the twist of a figure, and the gallop of a horse.

“Finally, the experience of seeing even just one of these sculptures – the bronze cast of Degas’ Little Dancer, Aged Fourteen from 1881 – the centerpiece of the Impressionist galleries in only a handful of world museums, it is a rare opportunity for any museum to borrow and exhibit this sculpture,” said Blazier. “It is a profoundly beautiful sculpture – modern before its time, shocking in 1881, and is today one of the most beloved works of the Impressionists.”

Because the works are three-dimensional, Degas used the physics of form, mass, balance and movement in his creations. The exhibit is further expanded with the correlating artist's better-known paintings and pastels, on display from museums and private collections.

Boca Raton Museum of Art has an ongoing mission to bring major international exhibitions to the area while cultivating long-range exchanges of the visual arts with museums around the world, she said.

“The museum is committed to bringing major international exhibitions to its galleries, while developing long-range exchanges of the visual arts with museums in other countries. Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures is just such an exhibition,” she said. “Degas in Bronze at the Boca Raton Museum of Art affords us the rare opportunity to bring this masterpiece to South Florida, accompanied by 72 other posthumously cast Degas bronzes.”

Degas in Bronze: The Complete Sculptures was on display January 25 - April 27. Boca Raton Museum of Art, In Mizner Park, 501 Plaza Real, Boca Raton. Hours: Sun., Mon. noon – 5 p.m.; Tues., Thurs., Sat. 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.; Wed., Fri., 10 a.m. – 9 p.m., closed holidays. www.BocaMuseum.org
