Cellulite, also known as adiposis edematosa, dermopanniculosis deformans, status protrusus cutis, and gynoid lipodystrophy, is the marbled, dimpled, or otherwise uneven appearance of the skin on the lower limbs, abdomen, and pelvic region that occurs on most American women and some men. It is caused by uneven distribution of subcutaneous fat beneath the skin. The factors that contribute to cellulite formation are poorly understood, and while the cosmetics industry offers many products and procedures which are claimed to treat cellulite, there is no scientific evidence that any of them reduce the appearance of cellulite. In fact, Dr. Michael F. McGuire, a clinical associate professor serving at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles, said in an interview that "realistically there is no cure for cellulite". The treatments that cosmetic centers sell to their customers with the promise of cellulite reduction may only very temporarily have any affect, and this limited affect is usually only due to swelling of the skin that is a side affect of whatever treatment is undertaken.
